PSY – GENTLEMAN

This is the new one from PSY, ‘GENTELEMAN’

The point is not if it’s good but if it’s good enough to plaster PSY into the South Korean and  World Hall of Musical Fame. I think ‘GENTLEMAN’ is nearly as deep a song lyrically as ‘GANGAM STYLE’ and I hope the world will also find  the new PSY song as moving. For those who do not remember of tried to forget ‘GANGAM STYLE’ was the song that caused nearly everybody, especially North Koreans, to admit that the world is not as serious as it looks.

Somebody That I Used to Know – Walk off the Earth (Gotye – Cover)

The video and song is extremely addictive and is being performed by Walk off the Earth which is a Canadian indie band formed in 2006 in Burlington, Ontario. Five people (including one bearded guy), three main voices, one steel-string guitar and tonnes of talent gave rise to this viral video.

The name of the song is Somebody That I Used to Know which was originally sung by Gotye – Wouter “Wally” De Backer (born 21 May 1980), also known professionally by his stage name Gotye (pronounced /ˈɡɒti.eɪ/ GOT-tee-ay) is a BelgianAustralianmulti-instrumental musician and singer-songwriter. The name “Gotye” is derived from “Gaultier” (or “Gautier” or “Gauthier”,) the French equivalent of “Wouter” (“Walter” in English.) Gotye’s voice has been compared to Sting and Peter Gabriel, some fans even going to the extent of mixing Gotye’s vocals with tracks by The Police – Wikipedia

As amazing as the Walk Off The Earth video is, Gotye steals the show every time. The song is made nearly perfect with the help of Kimbra Kimbra Johnson (born 27 March 1990), known mononymously as Kimbra, is a New Zealand singer/songwriter from Hamilton, New Zealand. She is currently based in Melbourne, Australia.

“Somebody That I Used To Know”
(feat. Kimbra)

[Gotye:]
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember

You can be addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad that it was over

But you didn’t have to cut me off
Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don’t even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn’t have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don’t need that though
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

[Kimbra:]
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I’d done
But I don’t wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn’t catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

[Gotye:]
But you didn’t have to cut me off
Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don’t even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
And you didn’t have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don’t need that though
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

[x2]
Somebody
(I used to know)
Somebody
(Now you’re just somebody that I used to know)

(I used to know)
(That I used to know)
(I used to know)

Promotional Video for Trinidad and Tobago

A good friend sent me this Youtube link some days ago and I love it. Naturally, like all good promotional videos, it stresses only on the good and marketable. So with this being the time of year when Trinidad and Tobago can be sold the easiest to both the homesick locals and  and the foreigner, Come to Trinidad and Tobago videos are making the rounds for free. Except for too much pepper in some doubles and straying down some no-no streets alone at night, Trinidad and Tobago will present no exceptional challenges to the average tourist on an average tour.

Cat at the Window

Sandro del Prete's "Cat at the Window"

Can you see the Felius Catus aka the house cat, domestic cat, or just plain cat at the window? I am sure you can. If you didn’t then you are not alone and that is the style of the famous Swiss artist Sandor del Prete. Abraham Tamir is quoted in Wikipedia as saying Sandor del Prete ‘materializes the well-known psychological effect, of the difference between ‘looking’ (usually the first glace of an observer) and ‘seeing’ (when things are appreciated more thoroughly in the mind). The Cat at the Window is one of my favorite artworks or optical illusions of del Prete as it took me some considerable time to get past the bushy plant on the top shelf, the stockings hung out to dry like a used man, and even the well shaped glass of sippable wine on the window ledge. Once you overcome these physiological blocks you too will see the cat.

I am sure you are familiar with the work of  Sandor del Prete and you can see more at his website – sandrodelprete.com

Israel Kamakawiwoʻole – “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World”

I haven’t had the time to blog recently being occupied with everything my brain can lay its neurons on, from downloading movies, books and music to learning the ins and outs of Lightroom 3x. From planning a vacation to liking my Pentax K-7 even more but unhappy with my Tamrac camera bag. With my mind all over the place, and some good places at that,  I stumbled on Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (aka Iz),whose medley of “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World” I remembered from the movie Meet Joe Black, one of my favorites. Israel Kamakawiwoʻole was born in 1959 in Honolulu and became a famous musician and singer. Sadly, he died at a young age in 1997. The official Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole’s “What A Wonderful World” video on YouTube has so far received over 7.5 million plays but this blog is not allowed to embed that version. The popularity of this video is an indication of how good music can be timeless. This is one of my favorite songs and I am constantly on the lookout for songs which I feel and hope will live forever. Recently I discovered R.E.M‘s new Everyday is Yours to Win but only time will tell how long it will live.

Serena Williams’ Sexy New Video Game Ad Pulled

Serena Williams Top Spin

A good ad agency knows what will offend the pretentious so it is not surprising that this Serena Williams ad for the video game Top Spin was considered “too risqué for television.” That television would be American TV and obviously not Trinidad and Tobago TV which is accustomed to showing all forms of gyrations without even breaking a sweat or receiving a complaint except that the video was too short, or the skirt too long.

The Top Spin ad, I suppose, stressed too much on  the behind the scenes attractions of tennis instead of the boring part of the game which is as bland as dry toast in prison.  I admire the ad agency not only for a well made video that holds the attention as much as anything on Playboy TV but in also understanding that to offend is sometimes necessary to succeed in a world where commercial success is usually driven by sex.

China’s Best Kept Secret – 吉胡阿依

Today is  China‘s big day, or Double Ten, but it is even more special this year as people like me get to blog about  Triple Ten. Because the chances are close to zero that I will live to see another Triple Ten I am posting my tribute to China and their contribution to Trinidad and Tobago and the world.

Geely Tiger

China’s best kept secret isn’t the melamine in the milk, the Geely Tiger GT, Liu Xiaobo or the name of the owner of the Gunapo Church. China’s best kept secret is 25 year-old Ayi Jihu (吉胡阿依) who is being called China’s Madonna by people who are authorized to do these things.  If you look at some of Ayi’s videos on YouTube you will notice she can wine quite well by communist standards, a skill she developed while living in London, a city more cosmopolitan and has as much wining as  Port of Spain during Carnival time.  Ayi Jihu sold more than 100 million downloads of her music in China, which I assume, is a great achievement given China’s population of 1.4 billion. She is considered an R&B star and Ayi is going places like  Bollywood where she is due to appear in a production soon.

Ayi Jihu

I admire the Chinese not just for their ability to beat up, torture, then jail dissidents when needed, but for their ability to become leaders in the manufacture of everything from computer motherboards to people.  The Chinese I know in Trinidad and Tobago are smart and this might be so because when China has to export people their pool to choose from is large. Here in Trinidad and Tobago, our pool is small so even with laptops for many by 2020 we may still have to depend on oil and gas money rather than scattered brains to make ends meet. Drill, drill, drill!  China is on target to attaining world dominance but this will only happen when they conquer the last two frontiers – the automobile and winer-gul industries. Look out Toyota and Trinidad and Tobago, China is coming in your way.

And now for the traditional Chinese version of the post above:

Bollywood Hero – Easy on the eyes

The mini-series, Bollywood Hero was not bad and I will probably look at it again a few months. However, I came across this YouTube which was obviously a promotion for the series in the US. Not a bad idea. Planned spontaneity can be an excellent marketing tool.  Bollywood Hero, a three-part mini-series, premiered last year in the United States on a channel called IFC but I only saw it this year on something called ten-dollar DVD. Bollywood Hero was entertaining with some good laughs and songs. The mini-series was aimed at US or Western audiences and was filmed almost entirely in India. The goofy looking but likable American comedian Chris Kattan is an unlikely Bollywood Hero and starred as himself  in the mini-series which is also  filled with the expected Bollywood drama and two uncommonly beautiful beauties, former Miss India-Universe, Neha Dhupia, and former Miss India-USA, Pooja Kumar (पूजा कुमार). Bollywood Hero is obviously pleasant on the male eyes.

Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) -The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Video

The World Cup has developed into, not just a sport involving the whole world via TV and newspaper supplements, but the World Cup is is also concerts,  music CDs, books available at Amazon and RIK plus music videos and blogs. Somehow, the unofficial or official music mascot for FIFA is now Shakira, my favorite singer and decent belly dancer. Waka Waka has turned out to be as addictive as Waving Flag and this video has turned out to be amazing. I saw Shakira perform Waka Waka at the FIFA Kick Off Concert and she was amazing for a person who is only 4′ 11”. At the time of  posting, this video already had almost 7,000,000 hits on YouTube proving how popular the World Cup and its music is. As the man in the roti shop in Couva said yesterday, “well done, Jack Warner and company.”

M. Night Shayamalan’s The Last Airbender

“You are the last of your kind, all that remains of a once powerful nation” ~ from The Last Airbender

For the Summer of 2010, or as we in Trinidad and Tobago are fond of saying, for The Rainy Season, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies will release M. Night Shayamalan’s latest flick, The Last Airbender.  The movie was originally called Avatar: The Last Airbender which is the name of the animated TV series the movie is based  but after James Cameron rushed and named his movie Avatar, the production houses dropped Avatar from the name in order not to have Cameron ride Shayamalan’s back for free. Shayamalan’s Last Airbender stars Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Nicola Peltz, Randall Duk Kim, Jessica Andres and many more too numerous to cut and paste into this bog post. The movie is not without controversy as the original TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender “is set in an Asian-influenced world of Chinese martial arts and elemental manipulation” but the movie’s cast is mainly white. This angered pro-Asian people and I suppose the movie was made to make money more than anything.

The Last Airbender is opening on the 4th of July weekend in the US and was recently promoted with a high-price TV ad spot during the Superbowl . I am not sure what the production cost is for The Last Airbender but it looks like quite a few million dollars US but less than the cost of one Chinese  NAPA. Unlike NAPA, The Last Airbender seems set to be enjoyed by millions plus make some money.

Trinidad Carnival Girls

I think these girls go well with the music – not too laid-back like the video before and not too wild, like the video in my mind. These girls look even better at 480p.

It is that time of the year again where I hope to get some Carnival photos and not get arrested by the Water Police for using a hose. People complain that every year Carnival is the same but yet every year it is different. I  was never in Port of Spain on a Carnival Monday or Tuesday and asked myself what year is this. And yes, there will be some level of skin showing, which will aggravate those who are moral and virtuous in their own minds but its fun to aggravate people like that as they choose to live among humans but fail to appreciate them. As far as the music for 2010 is concerned, I am now enjoying last year’s music so maybe next year I will know if this year’s music is any good.

If I don’t get any Carnival photos for any reason this year then this YouTube is it.

Snakecharmer Binaural by Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra

There is no better way to listen to music – binaural or regular, Ottmar Liebert or other – than on a good headphone like a Bose Triport (around-ear) headphones though there is a risk of getting deaf after prolonged loud listening. Though the Bose Triport is a very efficient headphone, the deafness is due to the user, ignorant of how to get deaf while seeking joy through music,  pumping high decibel sound levels through the headphones to the user’s ears everyday for many days. However, there is hardly that deaf-risk if the listener is using a Dell Desktop’s headphone jack since Dell is skimpy on headphone output levels, possibly to save us from ourselves rather than a design blunder.

Binaural recording is a method of recording sound that uses a special microphone arrangement and is intended for replay using headphones. Dummy head recording is a specific method of capturing the audio, generally using a bust that includes pinnae (outer ears). Because each person’s pinnae are unique, and because the filtering they impose on sound directionality is learned by each person from early childhood, the use of pinnae during recording that are not the same as the ultimate listener may lead to perceptual confusion.” ~ Wikipedia

“Ottmar Liebert (born 1959)[1] is a German-born composer and guitarist, born to a Chinese-German father and a Hungarian mother. As a child, he spent most of his time traveling Europe and Asia with his family. Ottmar leads an ensemble called Luna Negra (“Black Moon”), which has gained popularity performing as a touring band and recording music albums in a “Nouveau Flamenco” style.” ~ Wikipedia

Ricky Nelson – Garden Party 1985

This is one from 1972:-

According to Wikipedia “In 1972, Ricky Nelson reached the Top 40 one last time with “Garden Party“, a song he wrote in disgust after a Madison Square Garden audience booed him when he tried playing new songs instead of just his old hits. “Garden Party” reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and was certified as a gold single.”

‘n’ it’s all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself

Not exactly an original thought but it’s stuck in my head with this song.
