Queen’s Park Savannah Photos 2011

Around the Savanna

After years of procrastination, I finally went to The Savannah early one Sunday morning to take photos of the area as my Pentax K-7 begged to be used. I managed to get the typical tourist shots plus some that were not in my mind before. The aim was to take advantage of what some photographers call the Golden Hour – the period just after sunrise and just before sunset. Non-photographers call that period the Jogging Hour but the majority of Joggers with shorts came later than the sunshine. On that Sunday, the sun, like a teenager, struggled to wake up but the light was interesting enough for me. On Carnival Monday and Tuesday the Golden Hour will be earlier but should still make for interesting photographsClick here for my photos.

For those who are interested, I extracted some interesting information from Wikipedia and the NALIS website about the Queen’s Park Savannah which is included below.

Port of Spain‘s largest open space—and the world’s largest traffic roundabouts—is the Queen’s Park Savannah, known colloquially simply as “the Savannah”. It occupies about 260 acres (1.1 km2) [1] of level land, and the distance around the perimeter is about 2.2 mi (3.5 km)” Wikipedia

“In 1817 the parcel of land known as Paradise Estate was sold by the heirs of Madame Peschier to the governing body of the day, the Cabildo, for 6,000 Pounds Sterling as a recreation ground for the citizens of Port of Spain. Seven years later, the Cabildo transferred Paradise Estate for 10,363 Pounds Sterling to the Colonial Government and what is now known as the Queen’s Park Savannah was laid out” NALIS

“In 1882 the Queen’s Park ordinance was passed to regulate the use of the Savannah. Historical accounts mention that besides cricket and horse racing, athletics, football, hockey, polo and until 1936, golf were played in the Savannah.”NALIS

Douglas Adams on those Elected People

Douglas Noel Adams (11 March 1952 – 11 May 2001) was an English writer and dramatist. He is best known as the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

Volney frets over fete

Carnival Box

Hubert Volney, a former colourful character and local judge turned Minister of Justice, is trying to save himself and his community from death by noise by objecting in court to the annual WASA Carnival Wet Fete. According to the Trinidad Express this morning, Mr. Volney’s objection is based on the level of noise which emanates from speaker boxes during the fete. It should be noted that speaker boxes are not the only boxes that make plenty noise around Carnival time but it is the speaker box noise which the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) polices and which Volney is objecting.

It is possible the magistrate might rule that no variations to the law will apply so the fete promoters will have to blast their music quietly or not at all. The problem with low-noise fetes is after the first hour or so no partygoer will be able to wine properly due to alcohol induced deafness.

No objection to fete

Like Volney, I also don’t like noise from fetes I am not attending especially when the music is loud but no good. Most people who don’t go to fetes don’t realize that the better fetes are really orgies where people have either very tight fitting or little clothes on. Because of this, fetes are fun and an avenue for the almost acceptable display of the human primal behaviour in public.  When the magistrate considers the application for the fete the magistrate must remember that a fete is where a group of people become happy, deaf, tight and horny at the expense of the happiness and sometimes hornyness of others.

RBTT Crap Continues in 2011

RBTT lies to customers

RBTT, or is it RBC, is what most customers call the new Public Service and in Trinidad and Tobago this says a lot. By that I mean it is not an organization that cares about its customers. This is why RBTT decided to shut down its electronic banking system over a weekend and as if  it wanted to make the public service look good, the disrespectful bank  also lied to customers. When I say lie I mean put out an ad saying it was shutting its electronic banking service and in bold say ONLY AT WITHDRAWALS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. That was and is a lie. Most customers were unable to access cash from ANY AMB since Saturday evening and this was still so on Sunday morning. Maybe somebody high up at RBTT is being fed bullshit by the incompetent RBTT IT people just as the AG was fed crap by his investigators.  I again say, somebody at RBTT has to be fired for this continuing indifference to customers.

Proof of RBTT's flair for lies

Maybe people were fired the last time a huge fiasco occurred but the public needs to know that the bank is getting rid of its incompetence. To correct this continuing incompetence and indifference by RBTT to customers, people need to show the bank who has the power. Money talks but money also walks.

Anti-Corruption Commission to Expose Sugar Daddies

Dressed for the occasion

Dear aka,

All my friends told me since I have nothing better to do I should write you, a man with a big blog, for advice on something that has been troubling me for some time. I read that PM Kamie say they want to crack down on White Collar Crime so they want to set up an Anti-Corruption Commission.  PM Kamie say “If it is that a man works for $1,000 but he is driving a million-dollar BMW, then where did that money come from?” Well aka, I think I have a little whistle to blow. There is a girl who works in my office as a clerk for about $5,000 a month but drives a brand new 3-Series BMW and lives in a $4,000 a month apartment. This girl seems addicted to the gym and a diet. She is always dressed in the finest tight pants, short skirts and popping tops. I think she gets her money through corruption but my friends say she is probably a very good worker as the Boss was seen on more than a few occasions going to her apartment late at night to give her work. Do you think I should blow a whistle and take out a bigger life insurance?

Cautiously,

Preserved Cherry

Sugar Daddy love

Dear Preserved Cherry,

I can see the Anti-Corruption Commission having the power to dig deep in the lives of many people who are either corrupt or just having a good time. In the case you described, I think the Boss is the clerk’s Sugar Daddy. This may not be a White Collar crime but more like a good White Collar wine. On the other hand, the Boss may be involved in some corrupt activity to raise some extra funds to support his lovely, high-maintenance habit. I am sure the Anti-Corruption Commission will have a good time investigating the reasons so many people are having too much fun in this country. Not only will the Anti-Corruption Commission cause the sale of BMWs and Audis to plunge, further stagnating the economy, but it will encourage both Sugar Daddies and those they Sugar Daddy to become more creative. Boldfaceness will be a thing of the past. I think you should blow your little whistle since you never know the truth until the Government legally spies. Also, the Government is going to pass a law to protect whistle blowers, a rapidly dying breed. In Trinidad and Tobago, this protection will have to include the issuing of hand guns and bullet proof vests by the State to the whistler as hits are now the weapon of choice in solving all problems.

The Kindle Wi-Fi – Unboxed and Useful

The Kindle is packed in Frustration-free packaging and like the rest of the world, assembled in China

The Kindle 6″ Wi-Fi is shipped in an unattractive box and but as the old saying goes, never judge by box alone. The package is certified (by Amazon, I assume) to be frustration-free which is something that should be extended to people as well.  On seeing the box, there is the usual excitement due to anticipation of the thought of a new box and what it will bring.

The Kindle is ready to use, straight out the box

I can also certify the box is frustration-free and once it’s opened, the Kindle is on and ready to use. The battery life for the Kindle is amazing and the folks at Amazon, including Jeff Bezos, made sure the battery technology in the Kindle could live up to reader’s expectations. When last did a paper book need to be recharged using a USB port?

The next item in the Kindle box is the tiny users' manual

The paper manual included with the Kindle is a quick-start guide. For more details on how to do fancy stuff like uploading PDFs, making the Kindle talk, searching, play MP3s etc, the user would have to either download (in Kindle format) the real manual or simply visit the Kindle page at Amazon.

The only two items included with the kindle is the USB cable and an AC adapter

Simplicity is the motto in designing the Kindle so using the Kindle, including charging should be intuitive. If you get one cable and one AC adapter you will not have to think too much, just like using paper books.

Like a supermodel, the Kindle is thin

The Kindle is easy to hold though thinner than most good books. It leaves the reader feeling confident that he or she holding on to something that is of high quality and being assembled in China is irrelevant. Everything good now comes from China  like the iPhone, the Kindle, the corruption-free construction industry.

The quality of the screen - E Ink Pearl - is unbelieveably clear and crisp

I showed the Kindle to several people – skeptics and believers – and everybody agreed that reading anything on the Kindle was effortless and just like reading on paper. The Kindle is a black and white only device which for most readers, is not an issue. So far, I think the Kindle is amazing and useful, but in the short- term, it will not replace paper as many books are not available in Kindle format for complicated reasons that might sound either stupid or greedy to most.

Photos look good on the Kindle

Setting up the Wi-Fi is easy and buying books is a little too easy. One-Click-Ordering was designed to make buying effortless, but in the hands of the weak and impulsive, it is good for the American economy.

Maybe the Government should give students Kindles instead of paper text books as it would help save trees and protect the backs of students from muscle strain and also reduce incidents of slip disk. This e-text book idea is already being explored in Africa.
