Trinidad and Tobago – The Calm Before the Storm

ok-then

So what has Mr. Howai and the rest of the brilliant PP government done to reduce the massive wastage of fuel due to the thousands of people driving from South and Central into the world famous bottleneck, Port of Spain, to work? This Government promoted inefficiency is not only a drain on the treasury but a complete waste of hundreds of thousands of man-hours spent in traffic daily. The inefficiency due to traffic is made worse by the amount of stress and related health issues, such as unhappiness, this inflicts on those who are unfortunate enough to travel this route to earn enough to feed their families and buy subsidized gasoline.

This daily South-North traffic was encouraged by Manning when he built several tall buildings to house the people in the tiny capital Port of Spain almost as a form of vengeance. It was hoped that one of the first acts of the PP Government should have been a plan to get citizens to work closer to where they live rather than give contracts to party financiers. Naturally, Kamla’s amusing and often childish sounding chant “serve the people, serve the people, serve the people” can no longer be heard as the Government buys fifty two armored vehicles to “blow up the people” should they step out of line. Are we a nation on the verge of revolt?

Yes, a revolt might be near simply because when the Government, either PP or PNM, removes the unsustainable subsides on gasoline, water, electricity and GATE, CEPEP, URP and CDAP, all hell will break loose in paradise and whether party financiers get their contracts and the appropriate kickbacks paid will be the least of the Government’s concerns.

No Bullies, No Corruption, No Anil

stop-bullying-cartoon3-598x644

I have no idea if the pro-corruption Life Sport programme will be another straw which will break the Partnership’s back again  but certainly the retention of Anil Roberts will. His supporters say that Anil “does give it to them good” but it seems he cannot take it despite his claims of having a very broad, swimmers back. That is how it is with bullies.

Unfortunately the only things Anil ever brought to this country as a politician was his over inflated ego, delusion of grandeur, bullyism and an oversize mouth. The Prime Minister terminated the Life Sports programme, which came under Mr. Roberts, because the audit report said there were more than several instances of suspected massive corruption. Under the Life Sport programme there were a few hundred million dollars earmarked to keep young teens away from gangs,  crime and political life. Instead the audit report suggests much of this money went into the pockets of the chosen few who, like many before them, craved plundering the Treasury.

Anil Roberts said the termination of the programme will cause poor black boys to suffer but was silent on whether his legendary incompetence as a Minister of Sports made poor black boys happy. This is a disgraceful  national fiasco so why is Anil Roberts thinking twice about resigning but more importantly, why is the Prime Minister afraid to fire him. Fear is weakness.

Trinidad and Tobago – Your Stones Will Be Unturned, Again

cops

THIS NEVER HAPPENED

In what can only be described as uncharacteristic brilliance after a national tragedy, our local police made a prompt arrest of a group of suspected hit men, seized their high tech weapons and two bags of doubles within minutes after the group allegedly carried out a daring assassination of an well-known state prosecutor just after 12:00 am last night. The police was able to make this arrest and interception  because of the multitude of working and expensive CCTV cameras along the route were actually working and being monitored for a change. These phenomenally expensive high tech cameras were purchased using taxpayer’s money and installed by the usual high-priced government approved contractors, and monitored by an unknown, but strangely intelligent state agency that were not using the cameras to monitor girls with short dresses and low tops on the Avenue.

When the Ag. CoP was asked to comment he repeatedly said in a comforting manner “Not all murders are hits and but all hits are murders.” However, the Minister of National Security was relieved that something finally went right after a murder. When asked to comment on the National Security breakthrough the Minister blushed uncontrollably, yet sadly, and said the Prime Minister was planning to once again have every stone unturned. He said the PM was ready to offer a reward, which was less than the lotto, for vital information on the assassination, to anyone who craved sudden death via bullets from high-power rifles at close range. The Minister admitted, though he was the God of National Security,  had no clue if the reward would have been tax exempt, delivered via an anonymous wheelbarrow or could be used in the afterlife.

As for the motive for the gruesome murder, the Minister said they (the hit men) thought we were stupid and wanted to make us look bad internationally. When asked if the hit was an attempt to destabilize the country he said no, as the country was already mentally unstable long before this.

Fishing for Orange Juice in Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad Orange Juice - a Trinidad and Tobago Icon

Trinidad Orange Juice – a Trinidad and Tobago Icon

Ever since it was discovered in the US that 700 cans of Trinidad orange juice had cocaine hidden inside, the citizens and well wishers of Trinidad and Tobago became anxious and with baited breath are still waiting to know who the true exporter of this juice really is. Surely this must be the work of the mysterious and elusive Mr. Big.  Could this be the moment we have been waiting for donkey’s years?  Mr Big is the mythical and probably real figure who hides in plain sight among the commoners and dignitaries alike. He is the local drug kingpin with powers that would be the envy of any politician or leader. In fact legend says he is, and has always been, the real ruler of the land for countless years.  Mr. Big is the local Keyser Söze.

Some say he started with bags but others say foreign used cars or maybe scotch. Nobody really knows. With things going a little astray overseas recently, the hidden ruler and master of the local drug world is calling on all his politician friends on all sides, to defend him against the foreign, evil oppressors who find his juice in poor taste.  The population is skeptical that Big would ever be caught and identity ever known because of his connections in high places. Naturally, most feel the manufacturer of the juice is not the exporter of the coke and the one who will be charged might be a headless sardine in the cesspit of the local drug trade.

I think it was in very poor taste that the exporter would risk tarnishing the image of a product that is iconic to Trinidad and Tobago and loved by all. As a country, we should stand up against those who want to get rich regardless who or which country they destroy on the way. And if for no other reason Big or Sardine make ah jail it should be for tarnishing the image of the nation for a few big cars and rolly polly women.

Why Prados Now Suck

I want to advise Toyota to immediately stop selling Prados to the Government and their agencies and change the name of the vehicle to anything else. It is amazing how two consecutive administrations has, at taxpayers expense, almost destroyed the reputation in Trinidad and Tobago of a quality, high-end company and SUV. The Audi people must be thanking their good fortune that politicians and their stooges prefer Toyota. There is now a stigma attached to the Prado where the sight of one causes the average voter and taxpayer to go into a fit of rage despite not being able to see who is inside due to illegal, and heavy tints on the glass. The average voter thought they voted against this chaufferism last election but apparently those we voted in think otherwise. It will be wise to reveal to the public the written justification for buying, leasing or even using such a high end vehicle by politicians and their minions especially when the man on the street has to reduce their consumption of doubles from two to one not to lose weight, but to make ends meet. Is there such a written justification?

If this Government really care about the people  – as opposed to pretending to care by mouthing politically correct catch phrases and waving a flag on stage to the sounds of “One Love”-  they would set the example of going green by prohibiting all elected and selected Government officials from buying, using, or even dreaming of using gas guzzlers at the expense of taxpayers.  The People’s Partnership will do well to remember that they were voted in such an overwhelming fashion not because we thought they were sooooo good and competent but because the PNM was sooooo good at corruption and incompetence. It now seems that the population, by the voting in of the current bunch of egoist and non-performers, have moved from the frying pan into the fires of hell.  From all indications by experts, the economy is now depressed and so too is the population so stop the gallerying and get to work.

Israel Kamakawiwoʻole – “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World”

I haven’t had the time to blog recently being occupied with everything my brain can lay its neurons on, from downloading movies, books and music to learning the ins and outs of Lightroom 3x. From planning a vacation to liking my Pentax K-7 even more but unhappy with my Tamrac camera bag. With my mind all over the place, and some good places at that,  I stumbled on Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (aka Iz),whose medley of “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World” I remembered from the movie Meet Joe Black, one of my favorites. Israel Kamakawiwoʻole was born in 1959 in Honolulu and became a famous musician and singer. Sadly, he died at a young age in 1997. The official Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole’s “What A Wonderful World” video on YouTube has so far received over 7.5 million plays but this blog is not allowed to embed that version. The popularity of this video is an indication of how good music can be timeless. This is one of my favorite songs and I am constantly on the lookout for songs which I feel and hope will live forever. Recently I discovered R.E.M‘s new Everyday is Yours to Win but only time will tell how long it will live.

Wind Turbines Trinidad and Tobago Style

Taken by Neutronic
Image via Wikipedia

I am sure people in the Government are aware that some studies have already been done at UWI relating to wind turbines and other forms of alternative and renewable energy and its feasibility, or lack off feasibility in Trinidad and Tobago. I was told that even BPTT is/was doing some of its own research into wind energy in Trinidad, or maybe it was just Tobago – BP is an energy company that needs to avoid another oil spill, you see.

I don’t know if large-scale electricity generation using wind turbines will be feasible in Trinidad and Tobago as large amounts of land will be needed, vexing local farmers, mall builders and squatters. The idea of wind turbines sounds good, clean and renewable but wind turbines are not maintenance free as they need the occasional bug-cleaning and cobeux removal. As the power needs for the country grows the land for wind farm expansion may have to eventually be a man-made island off Otaheti.

I doubt there will be many residents in Trinidad and Tobago who will take up the wind turbine tax break proposed in the 2011 budget because of the cost of installing an 80-foot plus pole in their backyard, a pole similar in stature to the flagpole in the National Stadium. Besides the exorbitant cost of hiring a crane to hoist the tall pole and a 5 kW wind turbine, getting Town and Country approval isn’t cheap and not likely. Noise from the wind turbine might not be a big issue in any Trinidad and Tobago neighbourhood since the noise from those Peak and Katashi air conditioning units will drown out anything. I wonder what size battery bank will be needed for a 5 kW wind turbine? I can see wind turbine battery bank sizing will be the next project for some budding engineer.

I suppose this Government proposal was aimed at anybody (entrepreneur, smart man etc) who wants to get into the wind farm business and sell electricity to the nation.  Sorry for sounding so negative but my experiences tell me that in Trinidad and Tobago where big money is concerned, nothing is what it appears to be. I am not sure if producing electricity from wind turbines will be economic today as the country now has to find use for the excess energy that was supposed to go to the infamous Alutrint.

FIFA World CUP 2010 – Waving Flag – K’naan ft. Nancy Ajram

This is an addictive song and video for FIFA World Cup 2010 and you would expect nothing less for the World Cup and from Coca-Cola.  The World Cup 2010 is being held in South Africa and starts in a few days. It will be available on TV in Trinidad and Tobago in HD and hopefully in English only on Directv.  Standard definition will be available on one of the local stations.

This version of the song was sung by K’naan featuring Nancy Ajram. K’naan is from Somalia and Namcy Ajram is from Lebanon. The name of the song is Waving Flag which was written by Keinan Abdi Warsam (K’naan), Peter Hernandez, Philip Lawrence, and Jean Daval. Waving Flag or waving anything in the air is something the people of Trinidad and Tobago can identify with easily.

Waving Flag Lyrics (Original Song)

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

Born to a throne, stronger than Rome
But Violent prone, poor people zone
But it’s my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam
But out of the darkness, I came the farthest
Among the hardest survival
Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
Except no defeat, surrender retreat

So we struggling, fighting to eat and
We wondering when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that fateful day
It’s not far away, so for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

So many wars, settling scores
Bringing us promises, leaving us poor
I heard them say, love is the way
Love is the answer, that’s what they say,
But look how they treat us, make us believers
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn’t hold us
Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers

But we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering, when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that faithful day
It’s not far away, but for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And everybody will be singing it
(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And you and I will be singing it
(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And we all will be singing it
(Ohhh Ohh Ohh Ohh)

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, when I get older
I will be stronger, just like a Waving Flag
Just like a Waving Flag, just like a Waving flag
Flag, flag, Just like a Waving Flag.

Latoya Woods – The New Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe

latoya woods

Stunning winner: Miss T&T/Universe Latoya Woods during the swimsuit segment of the pageant on Sunday night at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad hotel in Port of Spain. - Photo: STEPHEN DOOBAY - Trinidad Express - I hope this is considered fair use by all concerned

Girls with long legs have a definite advantage over the shorter-leg variety as they are seen as being much more beautiful by men; it is a biological thing. Pretty girls are also thought of as being more desirable than unattractive ones as are rich men with loose wallets.

There is a photo of Latoya Woods, the new Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe representative, in the Trinidad Express today showing Latoya lounging on a couch at The Hyatt – a couch I have favorably encountered in the past – and if you didn’t think she was a winner before, this photo will change your mind.  She is easily a stunner with her very pretty face, long legs and other exciting dimensions. I will probably post that photo later if  The  Express, and or, Latoya  promises not to take any legal, or other offensive and painful action, against me.

As I said in a previous post, it must be difficult to choose a Miss Trinidad and Tobago since we are a country full of pretty and exciting girls; some apparently more exciting than others but that is not for this post. I am not sure where or when the next Miss Universe competition will be held as Wikipedia is silent on that issue, but I will be keeping a keen eye on the new competitors, including the usually docile Miss Japan.

Sasha Grey – Porn Actress Extraordinaire

sasha_grey

Sasha Grey

Sasha Grey is hailed as one of the most popular and talented porn stars today. She is 21 years old and has so far starred in 189 adult films. She has won 8 Adult movie awards including the prestigious AVN Best Three-Way Sex Scene (2007) (along with two others, naturally) and Best Oral Sex Scene (2008) – I am sure you, dear reader, are familiar with both scenes but I am not. Her claim to fame is not simply from the adult movie business but from other things like appearing fully clothed on the Tyra Banks Show. Sasha was also recently featured in RollingStone Magazine displaying not only her intellect but her body as well. Her most mainstream claim to fame so far is being the main character in the Academy Award winning director Steven Soderbergh‘s movie, The Girlfriend Experience, which is available from Amazon and in Blu-ray. To quote Wikipedia “The New York Times described Sasha Grey’s pornographic career as “distinguished both by the extremity of what she is willing to do and an unusual degree of intellectual seriousness about doing it.” She embodies the best of all imaginable worlds.

sasha_grey_1The story of Sasha Grey is typical. She comes from a broken home and moved out to live on her own at age 16. Sasha eventually graduated from high school and studied film, dance and acting in junior college. She, like so many with her talent, had to choose between a career as a stripper or as a porn actress to make ends meet and money. Luckily for all concerned, she made the right choice.

About the adult porn industry:

A Reuter’s article states there are 11,000 pornographic titles released every year on DVD and the industry is a multi-billion dollar one. CBS puts this figure at US$10 billion. Porn is also widely accepted and appreciated in the US with big names like GM, Marriott and Time Warner selling erotica to Americans. Porn is not just an American thing with countries all over the world either having a porn industry or appreciating the porn industry. The capital of European porn is no longer Paris but Budapest, Hungary since, according to Forbes Magazine, “Hungarian girls are beautiful, they want money, and there is something in their blood. They can do it.” Do you know where that girl on your desktop is from?

I am not sure if there is a porn industry in Trinidad and Tobago but if there is it must be illegal since we are not yet a developed nation. The Internet is creating nightmares for local customs officers and religious leaders as porn is now delivered in discrete  ways customs and preachers have probably tried and tested with great success. Once people want it, you can’t stop it.

Ricky Nelson – Garden Party 1985

This is one from 1972:-

According to Wikipedia “In 1972, Ricky Nelson reached the Top 40 one last time with “Garden Party“, a song he wrote in disgust after a Madison Square Garden audience booed him when he tried playing new songs instead of just his old hits. “Garden Party” reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and was certified as a gold single.”

‘n’ it’s all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself

Not exactly an original thought but it’s stuck in my head with this song.

Noriko Sakai – No Prison, Please

The Pretty Sakai NorikoThe popular singer, Noriko Sakai, became a celebrity in Japan in 1987 when she was almost sixteen, after releasing the hit song, Otoko no Ko ni Naritai. She was, or is, very popular in Japan,  Hong Kong and Taiwan but strangely, almost unheard of in Trinidad and Tobago.   She was famous not only for her singing but her squeaky clean, girl-next-door image. Because of her popularity and high public expectations, she later went into acting and probably mild stimulant drug use.

In August this year the shock turned to horror when her husband was arrested for possession of illegal stimulants and Noriko disappeared, apparently she was on the run. When Noriko reappeared she was charged with possession of illegal drugs, a stimulant, a whopping 0.0008 grams of it which police found at her home. Noriko Sakai pleaded guilty to using and possessing the illegal drug. Prosecutors said they want an 18-month prison term for Noriko since she is a celebrity and setting a bad example for the public. The court’s decision is scheduled for November 9.

noriko sakai ankle tattooI am not too sure, but from what I have read so far I think the Japanese press went after Noriko after she was seen with a sexy tattoo on her ankle. A tattoo on a woman’s ankle is usually a sign which says “bad but exciting girl above.”

Noriko’s wants leniency and now intends to get a divorce from her trouble-making husband and she also wants to study nursing care in the future. A tearful Noriko was quoted as saying “I have a tendency to try too hard to live up to others’ expectations of me. I thought (stimulants) would help me move my body. … I used the drugs of my own will. … I am the one to blame.”

Noriko SakaiHere is what I think. Noriko Sakai should not go to jail since she already paid her dues to the society by losing face. Losing face is a big thing in Japan but the concept is quite alien to Trinidad and Tobago’s bad-john and big foreign bank account holding politicians. Noriko Sakai should not go to jail because she is too pretty for prison. How will keeping Noriko Sakai in jail for 18 months make society a better place. It’s not like she knocked a member of the public unconscious because the member spilled a drink or wine up on one of Noriko’s friends.  I can’t possibly see any judge looking at Noriko’s pretty face and sending her to jail. I don’t know much about Japanese legal traditions, but even the most heartless woman judge could see the folly in sending a celebrity this pretty to jail for a crime that is quite common in the manmade celebrity world.

How Not to Learn to Draw

early work by the former atrist turned blogger, aka_lol

early work by the former artrist turned blogger, aka_lol

I drew the picture about 5 or 6 years ago while learning to draw using the book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. It was my attempt to reproduce a drawing from the book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I wished I continued to learn since it is a skill I admire in those who can draw well. I also admire people who can write and those who can eat a wrapped chicken roti while standing without the roti suffering fatal structural damage and leakage.

Picasso, Nude Woman with Necklace 1968Recently, I saw a painting by the late Pablo Picasso and like the rest of the non-art world, I said, “What?” I have been saying “What?” about Picasso’s work since I have been seeing Picasso’s work. I suppose my reaction is typical and it is why he is considered a great artist though my reaction was initially one of “You call that art.” I am not here to argue if Picasso is great since popular opinion and auctions have settled that. I am only writing this post to encourage me to learn to draw as it will be my fallback position if this blogging thing doesn’t work out.

Commission of Enquiry Fiasco – Only in Trinidad and Tobago

no weed-mayarobeach.comPeople are starting to ask if the whole Commission of Enquiry fiasco was planned from the start of corruption activities. From the actions of a party loyalist disguised as a caring lawyer to his meteoric departure, then to find the COI was illegal because the brilliant minds didn’t publish it in the Gazette. In between all this was the no-nonsense DPP being appointed a judge and the former AG terminated in favor of a more loyal one. All this is awesome and should be made into a movie soon. It could be called “When The Man Hits The Fan The ManWill Smile”

Was there so much to cover up that an intricate plan of staged bias had to be hatched? Was it necessary to spend millions of recession dollars on the Commission then abort the Enquiry? Everybody knows this Government is not good with tax payers’ money and throwing away millions to save some loyal and crooked racketeers from going to jail is not unexpected. This latest incident shows the people how smart manish this Government really is and everybody knows a smart manish Government could never be good for the many, only the very few crooked ones, and those who hate regardless of their crooked backings.

To distract the public, a next smelter should be announced. More guns should also be found hidden in a selected police station as “No Weed Sold Here” signs are placed outside all stations. The price of gasoline should be increased so the Chambers could run dey mouth while milking the country dry in between the floods. Maybe the powers that be could arrange a few more murders to distract the public from the thiefing going on in plain sight. Of course, we are fed up but with the dotish Don Quixote on the other side, afraid to make jail again and our inability to rise above the complaints, we are screwed. We will, no doubt, write several letters to the editors and some may even blog about these historic events but in a few days it will be bad business as usual and a call to clean the drains.

Stacey Soloman – What a Wonderful Audition

It doesn’t matter who sings What a Wonderful World, Louie Armstrong’s version will always be the best. According to Wikipedia What a Wonderful World is a song written by Bob Thiele (as George Douglas) and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1968.”  I am sure it is one of the most recorded and talent-show-performed songs in the history of talent shows. What a Wonderful World is also popular among armature photographers who try to make nature photos look better in slide shows using sound.

In the audition for the X-Factor , The pretty and shy Stacey Soloman does a great performance of What a Wonderful World impressing The X-Factor judges, humans and even Simon.
