Israel Kamakawiwoʻole – “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World”

I haven’t had the time to blog recently being occupied with everything my brain can lay its neurons on, from downloading movies, books and music to learning the ins and outs of Lightroom 3x. From planning a vacation to liking my Pentax K-7 even more but unhappy with my Tamrac camera bag. With my mind all over the place, and some good places at that,  I stumbled on Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (aka Iz),whose medley of “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World” I remembered from the movie Meet Joe Black, one of my favorites. Israel Kamakawiwoʻole was born in 1959 in Honolulu and became a famous musician and singer. Sadly, he died at a young age in 1997. The official Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole’s “What A Wonderful World” video on YouTube has so far received over 7.5 million plays but this blog is not allowed to embed that version. The popularity of this video is an indication of how good music can be timeless. This is one of my favorite songs and I am constantly on the lookout for songs which I feel and hope will live forever. Recently I discovered R.E.M‘s new Everyday is Yours to Win but only time will tell how long it will live.

Eminem – Love The Way You Lie ft. Rihanna

Rihanna can be described, according to Wikipedia, as a BarbadianR&B recording artist and songwriter. She can also be described as talented, sexy, infinitely  better than Chris Brown, and able to sell more than 15 million albums and 45 million singles worldwide so far. This latest song with Eminem is strangely addictive despite, or is it because of, Eminem’s foul mouth. For this festive season of good will to all men and especially pretty women, Eminem – Love The Way You Lie ft. Rihanna is stuck in my head like bun-bun at the bottom of a pelau pot. I can be heard humming this song all day even in the bank, while in the shower, or driving through floods of unknown height. The lyrics suggest that Eminem is still a bitter man either because he is bitter or bitterness sells. Based on the lyrics from Love The Way You Lie, Eminem’s world is still not a happy world. Eminem, for those who don’t know him, is a modern-day, depressed poet with lyrical talent that will only be too apparent scores of years from now. Here is a sample of why he will be considered great in the future:

Just gonna stand there
And watch me burn
But that’s alright
Because I like
The way it hurts
Just gonna stand there
And hear me cry
But that’s alright
Because I love
The way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

I can’t tell you what it really is
I can only tell you what it feels like
And right now there’s a steel knife
In my windpipe
I can’t breathe
But I still fight
While I can fight
As long as the wrong feels right
It’s like I’m in flight
High of a love
Drunk from the hate
It’s like I’m huffing paint
And I love it the more that I suffer
I sufficate
And right before im about to drown
She resuscitates me
She f&*%%$#ing  hates me
And I love it
Wait
Where you going
I’m leaving you
No you ain’t
Come back
We’re running right back
Here we go again
It’s so insane…..

FIFA World CUP 2010 – Waving Flag – K’naan ft. Nancy Ajram

This is an addictive song and video for FIFA World Cup 2010 and you would expect nothing less for the World Cup and from Coca-Cola.  The World Cup 2010 is being held in South Africa and starts in a few days. It will be available on TV in Trinidad and Tobago in HD and hopefully in English only on Directv.  Standard definition will be available on one of the local stations.

This version of the song was sung by K’naan featuring Nancy Ajram. K’naan is from Somalia and Namcy Ajram is from Lebanon. The name of the song is Waving Flag which was written by Keinan Abdi Warsam (K’naan), Peter Hernandez, Philip Lawrence, and Jean Daval. Waving Flag or waving anything in the air is something the people of Trinidad and Tobago can identify with easily.

Waving Flag Lyrics (Original Song)

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

Born to a throne, stronger than Rome
But Violent prone, poor people zone
But it’s my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam
But out of the darkness, I came the farthest
Among the hardest survival
Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
Except no defeat, surrender retreat

So we struggling, fighting to eat and
We wondering when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that fateful day
It’s not far away, so for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

So many wars, settling scores
Bringing us promises, leaving us poor
I heard them say, love is the way
Love is the answer, that’s what they say,
But look how they treat us, make us believers
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn’t hold us
Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers

But we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering, when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that faithful day
It’s not far away, but for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And everybody will be singing it
(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And you and I will be singing it
(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And we all will be singing it
(Ohhh Ohh Ohh Ohh)

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, when I get older
I will be stronger, just like a Waving Flag
Just like a Waving Flag, just like a Waving flag
Flag, flag, Just like a Waving Flag.

Snakecharmer Binaural by Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra

There is no better way to listen to music – binaural or regular, Ottmar Liebert or other – than on a good headphone like a Bose Triport (around-ear) headphones though there is a risk of getting deaf after prolonged loud listening. Though the Bose Triport is a very efficient headphone, the deafness is due to the user, ignorant of how to get deaf while seeking joy through music,  pumping high decibel sound levels through the headphones to the user’s ears everyday for many days. However, there is hardly that deaf-risk if the listener is using a Dell Desktop’s headphone jack since Dell is skimpy on headphone output levels, possibly to save us from ourselves rather than a design blunder.

Binaural recording is a method of recording sound that uses a special microphone arrangement and is intended for replay using headphones. Dummy head recording is a specific method of capturing the audio, generally using a bust that includes pinnae (outer ears). Because each person’s pinnae are unique, and because the filtering they impose on sound directionality is learned by each person from early childhood, the use of pinnae during recording that are not the same as the ultimate listener may lead to perceptual confusion.” ~ Wikipedia

“Ottmar Liebert (born 1959)[1] is a German-born composer and guitarist, born to a Chinese-German father and a Hungarian mother. As a child, he spent most of his time traveling Europe and Asia with his family. Ottmar leads an ensemble called Luna Negra (“Black Moon”), which has gained popularity performing as a touring band and recording music albums in a “Nouveau Flamenco” style.” ~ Wikipedia

Ricky Nelson – Garden Party 1985

This is one from 1972:-

According to Wikipedia “In 1972, Ricky Nelson reached the Top 40 one last time with “Garden Party“, a song he wrote in disgust after a Madison Square Garden audience booed him when he tried playing new songs instead of just his old hits. “Garden Party” reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and was certified as a gold single.”

‘n’ it’s all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself

Not exactly an original thought but it’s stuck in my head with this song.

Stacey Soloman – What a Wonderful Audition

It doesn’t matter who sings What a Wonderful World, Louie Armstrong’s version will always be the best. According to Wikipedia What a Wonderful World is a song written by Bob Thiele (as George Douglas) and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1968.”  I am sure it is one of the most recorded and talent-show-performed songs in the history of talent shows. What a Wonderful World is also popular among armature photographers who try to make nature photos look better in slide shows using sound.

In the audition for the X-Factor , The pretty and shy Stacey Soloman does a great performance of What a Wonderful World impressing The X-Factor judges, humans and even Simon.

The Shadows – Ghost Riders in The Sky

I posted this from YouTube. I just clicked the button called Share and there it was, on my blog. So, what significance is this song to this blog? None really and I discovered Ghost Riders In The Sky while looking for another song called Good Vibrations from the movie Deer Hunter.  I like Ghost Riders for  the same reason I like cactus flowers and bachac bait. I hope you enjoy this guitar instrumental as mush as I enjoy hoping you do.
